Many of the typical dry grassland plants such as the small pasqueflower, Scabiosa canescens, cluster-head pink and catsfoot are now in danger of becoming extinct.
The last populations are so severely weakened that they are no longer able to survive or even spread on their own.
Through measures of conservation and reintroduction the plants are protected and spread. Project workers collect the seeds, which are sown, cared for and nurtured in the University of Potsdam botanical garden. The young plants are then replanted in suitable locations within the project areas.
The planting is mainly carried out in short-grass vegetation so that the young plants have a head start over the competition. Through these measures, the LIFE project hopes to strengthen the existing populations and increase the number of individuals of the endangered species.
The reintroduction measures are monitored through vegetation surveys.
